One in four of us will experience mental health difficulties at some point. If you’re dealing with anxiety, low mood, stress, or the impact of trauma, your Cigna  health insurance may help you access timely, evidence-based therapy without a long wait.

​

Many Cigna policies include outpatient mental health cover, which can support therapy for concerns such as Stress, anxiety disorders, depression, low mood, PTSD, trauma and more. Typically, your GP provides a referral, Bupa authorises treatment, and we’ll guide you through the next steps and take care of the rest.

Does Cigna cover therapy?

​

In many cases, yes. If your Cigna private health insurance policy includes outpatient mental health / behavioural health cover, talking therapy may be covered once Cigna has confirmed eligibility and approved treatment (where required).

Because Cigna benefits vary by policy and employer scheme, the fastest way to check what you have available is to log into your Cigna member area (or your plan portal) or call the claims team using the number on your Cigna membership card / documents.

Aligned Mindset Therapy can support Cigna members where treatment is authorised and your policy allows you to use us as your provider (e.g., approved/panel routes, or out-of-network benefits if included).

What types of therapy does Cigna cover?

This depends on your policy and what Cigna authorises, but commonly covered talking therapies may include:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

  • Counselling

  • Other evidence-based therapies where clinically appropriate and authorised

Do I need a GP referral to start therapy with Cigna?

​

Often, you can self-refer, but some policies/schemes may request a GP referral or clinical notes as part of the authorisation process.

If you’re unsure, contact Cigna first and they’ll tell you what they need for your specific plan.

How does Cigna therapy work with Aligned Mindset Therapy?

 

A typical route looks like this:

​

  1. Contact Cigna (via your member portal or claims line) to check mental health benefits

  2. Cigna confirms cover and, where needed, issues an authorisation/approval reference (and the number of sessions approved)

  3. Book your first session (online or in-person)

  4. Attend sessions (weekly or as agreed)

  5. Payment & invoicing

    • If direct billing is approved/available, we invoice in line with your authorisation, or

    • If your plan requires member payment, you may pay and then claim back from Cigna (we’ll guide you on what Cigna usually needs)

Is Cigna quicker than the NHS for therapy?

​

It can be. NHS waiting times vary by area and service, while private cover can often provide faster access (depending on clinician availability and your policy authorisation steps).

​

What mental health concerns can Cigna cover therapy for?

​

Approval depends on your policy terms and Cigna’s authorisation process. People commonly seek therapy support for

  • Hybrid (a mix of both)

Will I have to pay anything upfront?

Often, no if your treatment is authorised and direct billing is in place.

You may need to pay some or all costs if:

  • Your policy includes an excess or co-payment

  • You reach your annual outpatient/therapy limit

  • Your plan only covers specific provider networks and you choose an alternative route

​

If anything may be payable, we’ll flag it early so there are no surprises.

How do I get Cigna pre-authorisation?

  1. Start your claim via your Cigna member portal or claims line

  2. Cigna checks your cover and confirms the most appropriate support route

  3. You receive an authorisation/approval reference (and usually a session allowance)

  4. Share that with us, and we’ll take it from there
