One in four of us will experience mental health difficulties at some point. If you’re dealing with anxiety, low mood, stress, or the impact of trauma, your Bupa health insurance may help you access timely, evidence-based therapy without a long wait.

Many Bupa policies include outpatient mental health cover, which can support therapy for concerns such as Stress, anxiety disorders, depression, low mood, PTSD, trauma and more. Typically, your GP provides a referral, Bupa authorises treatment, and we’ll guide you through the next steps and take care of the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bupa cover therapy?

In many cases, yes. If your Bupa policy includes mental health cover, therapy is usually paid for under your outpatient benefits (subject to your annual limit and Bupa authorisation).

Aligned Mindset Therapy is a Bupa-recognised provider, so we can:

  • Bill Bupa directly (no claim forms)

  • Offer sessions online or in-person

  • Support a range of evidence-based approaches, including CBT, counselling and psychotherapy (as authorised by Bupa)

Because cover varies by policy, the quickest way to confirm your allowance is via the My Bupa app or by calling Bupa.

What types of therapy does Bupa cover?

This depends on your policy and what Bupa authorises, but commonly covered treatments include:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

  • Counselling

  • Psychotherapy

  • Trauma-focused therapy where clinically appropriate and authorised

If you’re unsure what’s included on your plan, Bupa can confirm what’s covered.

Do I need a GP referral to start therapy with Bupa?

Often, no. Many members can access support via Bupa’s Direct Access pathway for mental health, which means you can usually self-refer without seeing your GP first (policy-dependent).

Bupa will advise you on the right route and confirm whether any GP input is needed for your specific plan.

How does Bupa therapy work with Aligned Mindset Therapy?

  1. Contact Bupa (via Direct Access or your usual claims route)

  2. Bupa confirms your cover and issues an authorisation code

  3. Book your first session (online or in-person)

  4. Attend sessions (typically weekly or as agreed)

  5. We invoice Bupa directly using your authorisation code

Is Bupa quicker than the NHS for therapy?

It can be. NHS waiting times vary widely by area and service, while private healthcare can often offer faster access depending on clinician availability and your policy.

At Aligned Mindset Therapy, we’ll let you know our current availability and do our best to offer appointments promptly.

What mental health conditions can Bupa cover therapy for?

Bupa may cover treatment for many common mental health concerns, such as:

  • Anxiety (including panic, social anxiety, health anxiety)

  • Depression / low mood

  • PTSD / trauma

  • Stress and burnout

  • Grief and bereavement

  • Adjustment difficulties (life changes, transitions)

  • Sleep problems (where linked to a mental health concern)

What’s approved depends on your policy, clinical assessment, and Bupa’s authorisation process.

Can I see a therapist online with Bupa?

Yes—online therapy is commonly covered in the same way as in-person sessions, as long as it’s with a Bupa-recognised provider and authorised on your policy.

With Aligned Mindset Therapy you can choose:

  • Online video sessions

  • In-person sessions (London clinics)

  • Hybrid (a mix of both)

Will I have to pay anything upfront?

Usually, no. We invoice Bupa directly once you provide your authorisation code.

You may need to pay if:

  • Your policy has an excess, or

  • You reach your annual outpatient limit

If anything might be payable, we’ll flag it early so there are no surprises.

How do I get Bupa pre-authorisation?

Pre-authorisation is typically quick

  1. Contact Bupa (phone or app)

  2. They’ll check your cover and assess what support you need

  3. You’ll receive an authorisation code (sometimes immediately)

  4. Share that code with us and we’ll take it from there
