Supporting your wellbeing with WPA Health Insurance

One in four of us will experience mental health difficulties at some point. If you’re dealing with anxiety, low mood, stress, or the impact of trauma, your WPA health insurance may help you access timely, evidence-based therapy without a long wait.

​

Many WPA policies include outpatient mental health cover, which can support therapy for concerns such as Stress, anxiety disorders, depression, low mood, PTSD, trauma and more. Typically, your GP provides a referral, Bupa authorises treatment, and we’ll guide you through the next steps and take care of the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Does WPA cover therapy?

​

In many cases, yes. If your WPA plan includes mental health / talking therapy cover, sessions are usually paid for under your outpatient benefits (subject to your benefit limits and WPA authorisation). 

Aligned Mindset Therapy is a WPA-recognised provider, so we can

​

  • Invoice WPA directly (once authorised)

  • Offer sessions online or in-person

  • Provide evidence-based therapy approaches (as authorised by WPA)

​

Because cover varies by plan, the quickest way to check your remaining allowance is via the WPA Health app or the My WPA member area. 

​

What types of therapy does WPA cover?

​

This depends on your plan and what WPA authorises, but commonly covered talking therapies include:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

  • Counselling

  • Psychotherapy

  • Trauma-focused therapy where clinically appropriate and authorised

If you’re unsure what’s included on your policy, WPA can confirm what’s covered and what pathway you should use. 

 

Do I need a GP referral to start therapy with WPA?

 

It depends on your plan and the route you use.

​

WPA also provides a 24/7 Health & Wellbeing Helpline, and where clinically appropriate (and if included on your scheme), the helpline can arrange a referral to Structured Counselling (a brief, solution-focused model). 

 

The safest approach is to contact WPA first— they’ll confirm whether any referral or additional information is needed for your specific cover.

 

How does WPA therapy work with Aligned Mindset Therapy?

​

  1. Contact WPA to confirm your cover and pre-authorise treatment

  2. WPA issues an authorisation (and any reference details you’ll need)

  3. Book your first session (online or in-person)

  4. Attend sessions (typically weekly or as agreed)

  5. We invoice WPA directly in line with your authorisation

 

WPA typically settles bills directly with the treatment provider once authorised. If an excess / shared responsibility or benefit limit affects your claim, WPA will let you know what (if anything) you need to contribute. 

 

Is WPA quicker than the NHS for therapy?

​

It can be. NHS waiting times vary by area and service, while private healthcare can often offer faster access depending on clinician availability and your policy.

 

At Aligned Mindset Therapy, we’ll let you know our current availability and do our best to offer appointments promptly.

 

What mental health concerns can WPA cover therapy for?

 

WPA may cover treatment for many common concerns, such as:

  • Anxiety (including panic, social anxiety, health anxiety)

  • Depression / low mood

  • PTSD / trauma

  • Stress and burnout

  • Grief and bereavement

  • Adjustment difficulties (life changes, transitions)

  • Sleep problems (where linked to a mental health concern)

 

What’s approved depends on your policy, clinical assessment, and WPA’s authorisation process. 

 

Can I see a therapist online with WPA?

 

Often, yes-online sessions are commonly authorised similarly to in-person sessions, as long as treatment is authorised on your policy and delivered by a WPA-recognised provider.

 

With Aligned Mindset Therapy you can choose:

  • Online video sessions

  • In-person sessions (London / NW London clinics)

  • Hybrid (a mix of both)

 

Will I have to pay anything upfront?

 

Usually, no. WPA generally settles bills directly with the treatment provider once your claim is authorised. 

You may need to pay if

  • Your policy has an excess / shared responsibility, or

  • You reach your outpatient / therapy benefit limit.

​

If anything might be payable, we’ll flag it early so there are no surprises.

 

How do I get WPA pre-authorisation?

 

Pre-authorisation is usually straightforward:

  1. Contact WPA (member services/claims route)

  2. They’ll confirm your cover and assess what support you need

  3. You’ll receive authorisation details

  4. Share these with us, and we’ll take it from there
