Systemic Therapy (sometimes called systemic psychotherapy) is a relational approach that looks beyond “what’s wrong with me?” and gently explores what’s happening around me—in families, partnerships, friendships, workplaces, communities, and the wider systems we’re part of.

Because we’re shaped by our relationships, it makes sense that stress, anxiety, low mood, burnout, conflict, or feeling “stuck” can be connected to patterns in the people and environments around us. Systemic Therapy helps you make sense of those patterns, understand your role within them, and create change that feels realistic and lasting.

 

What is Systemic Therapy?

Systemic Therapy is based on the idea that we don’t live in isolation. Our thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and coping strategies are influenced by

​

  • family roles and expectations

  • communication patterns (spoken and unspoken)

  • intergenerational beliefs and experiences

  • attachment, closeness, boundaries, and conflict styles

  • cultural, social, and workplace pressures

  • the quality of support around you (or the lack of it)

​

Rather than focusing only on symptoms, systemic work explores meaning, context, and relationships—with care and without blame.

How Systemic Therapy can help

​

In sessions, we might explore:

  • Recurring relationship patterns (e.g., people-pleasing, conflict cycles, shutting down, overfunctioning)

  • Boundaries and emotional load (especially if you’re caring for others or carrying responsibility)

  • Family dynamics—past and present, including intergenerational patterns

  • Communication and repair after misunderstandings, distance, or trust ruptures

  • Life transitions like parenthood, separation, menopause, career change, relocation, or bereavement

  • Support networks—who helps, who drains, and what you need more of

 

The goal isn’t to “fix” anyone. It’s to understand what’s happening, broaden your choices, and help you feel more grounded and empowered in how you relate to others.

Do I need to bring my family or partner?

​

Not necessarily. Systemic Therapy can be done 1:1, where we explore important relationships and influences as they show up in your life. You can also choose to attend therapy with a partner or family member if that feels helpful and appropriate.

​

Even in individual sessions, we can still do powerful systemic work mapping relationship dynamics, noticing patterns, and building new ways of responding.

​

What to expect in sessions

Systemic Therapy is collaborative, curious, and practical. Sessions often include:

  • thoughtful questions that help you see situations from new angles

  • mapping exercises (like relationship maps or family patterns)

  • exploring different perspectives and the “rules” of the system you’re in

  • identifying what keeps a cycle going—and where change is possible

  • strengthening boundaries, voice, and support

We’ll go at a pace that feels safe. If you have a trauma history, the work can be approached in a trauma-informed way, with nervous system support and stabilisation as needed.

​

Systemic Therapy might be a good fit if you…

  • feel impacted by family stress or difficult dynamics

  • keep repeating the same relationship patterns and want to understand why

  • struggle with conflict, boundaries, or feeling responsible for others

  • feel isolated, unsupported, or “on the outside” of your relationships

  • want to improve communication and connection

  • are navigating a major life change and want steadier support
