Systematic Desensitisation

Systematic desensitisation is a therapeutic approach used to help individuals overcome phobias and anxiety disorders by gradually exposing them to the feared object or situation in a controlled and progressive manner. This is a list of situations related to the phobia, ranked from the least to the most anxiety-provoking. For example, if the client has a fear of flying, the hierarchy might start with thinking about booking a flight and end with being on an airplane during turbulence.

3. Gradual Exposure and Desensitisation after inducing Hypnosis

The therapist begins exposing the client to the least anxiety-provoking situation on the hierarchy while they are in the hypnotic state. Through guided imagery and suggestion, the therapist helps the client visualise the situation in a calm and controlled manner.

  • Relaxation Techniques: Throughout this process, the therapist uses relaxation techniques and positive suggestions to help the client remain calm.

  • Progressive Steps: Once the client feels comfortable and can visualize the initial step without anxiety, they move to the next level in the hierarchy. This progression continues until the client can imagine the most feared scenario without experiencing significant anxiety.

Throughout the sessions, the therapist reinforces positive responses and coping mechanisms. Suggestions for calmness, confidence, and control over fear are repeatedly given to strengthen the client's ability to manage their anxiety.

As the client becomes desensitised to their fears in the hypnotic state, they are encouraged to gradually face these situations in real life. The therapist might provide techniques for self-hypnosis or relaxation that the client can use outside of sessions.

The therapist monitors the client's progress and adjusts the treatment plan as needed. Some clients may require additional sessions or modifications in the hierarchy of fears to ensure successful desensitisation.
